Reduce losses! Technologies for industrial drive systems

Efficiency regulations for industrial engines have been introduced worldwide in recent years.
While improved induction machines can meet IE2 high efficiency standard, new motor technologies were introduced for higher demands. It is possible to eliminate the rotor losses with synchronous motors. Unfortunately, these machines have no or poor line start ability but they provide high efficiency and excellent operational behavior when used with a frequency inverter as variable speed drives. In the industrial market, three different synchronous machines can be found today:
synchronous reluctance motor, rare earth permanent magnet motor, ferrite magnet motor.
Since all these motors operate with a frequency converter, the losses of the inverter must also be taken into account. The introduction of high efficient inverters with new wide bandgap semiconductors with very short voltage rise times is creating new challenges for insulation materials.
